Unicorn Growth Series #4 • Marketing • AIDA

Why Are You Watching Me Eat?

If the headline made you pause, the first stage of AIDA has already done its job. Good marketing guides the right person from attention to confident action — one clear step at a time.

Watch the hook in action

The title creates the pause. The message must earn the next few seconds.

Attention is useful only when it leads somewhere. After the initial interruption, the viewer needs relevance, a believable outcome and a simple next step.

AIDA is not a trick.

It is a practical way to organise communication around the way people notice, explore, evaluate and decide.

The real marketing problem

Most marketing underperforms because it tries to do everything at once.

A crowded advertisement, overloaded webpage or unfocused sales message asks the audience to notice, understand, trust, desire and act — all at the same moment.

AIDA creates sequence. First earn attention. Then hold interest. Help the person see why the outcome matters. Finally, make the next step clear and low friction.

The model is simple, but simplicity is not the same as superficiality. Used well, AIDA becomes a quiet design discipline behind websites, proposals, emails, advertisements, social posts and sales conversations.

The AIDA sequence

Four stages that sharpen the message and improve response.

Each stage has a different job. When those jobs are confused or skipped, the communication becomes harder to understand and easier to ignore.

A
AttentionMake the right people pause.
Stage 01

You cannot persuade people who do not even notice you.

Your first job is not to explain every feature. It is to interrupt automatic scrolling or habitual inattention with something relevant, useful, surprising or unmistakably specific.

  • Lead with a clear problem, tension or unexpected question.
  • Use a headline that earns curiosity without becoming clickbait.
  • Make the visual and the message reinforce one another.
  • Speak directly to a defined audience rather than “everyone”.
Reality checkNoise may attract eyes. Relevance attracts the right eyes.

I
InterestEarn a little mental real estate.
Stage 02

Once you have caught their eye, give them a reason to stay.

Interest grows when people recognise themselves, their frustrations or their aspirations in your message. The content should demonstrate that you understand the situation better than the generic alternatives competing for attention.

  • Describe the customer’s world in specific, recognisable language.
  • Use stories, examples and useful insights rather than vague claims.
  • Make the issue clearer, not more complicated.
  • Keep the content moving towards a meaningful outcome.
Useful questionWould the right prospect feel, “That sounds like my situation”?

D
DesireMove from “interesting” to “relevant to me”.
Stage 03

Translate the offer into an outcome the customer actually values.

Features describe what the product or service contains. Desire develops when the customer can imagine what improves: time saved, risk reduced, frustration removed, profit strengthened or confidence restored.

  • Connect features to practical and emotional outcomes.
  • Use case studies, proof and before-and-after contrasts.
  • Address the hesitation that may prevent a sensible decision.
  • Help the customer picture the result without exaggeration.
The shiftInterest says, “That is interesting.” Desire says, “This could help me.”

A
ActionMake the next step clear and low friction.
Stage 04

One clear call to action usually beats five competing options.

People are more likely to act when the next step feels useful, proportionate and safe. The action may be a purchase, a booking, a download, a reply or simply moving to the next page.

  • Ask for one primary action at the point of decision.
  • Use direct language that explains what happens next.
  • Remove avoidable forms, choices and uncertainty.
  • Match the size of the commitment to the customer’s readiness.
Low-friction example“Book a practical 30-minute review” is clearer than “Learn more about our solutions”.

The magic

Design every touchpoint to move the person one useful step forward.

The magic is not merely knowing AIDA. It is applying the sequence deliberately across the entire customer journey.

When the website, advertisement, proposal, email and sales conversation each do the right job at the right time, the brand becomes clearer and the next step becomes easier.

WebsiteDoes the page earn attention, explain relevance and lead to one clear next step?
EmailDoes the subject earn the open and does the body reward the reader’s attention?
ProposalDoes it connect the scope to the client’s desired outcome and decision criteria?
AdvertisementDoes it lead with the customer’s issue rather than a list of business claims?
Social contentDoes it make the reader feel understood, clearer or more confident?
Sales conversationDoes it guide discovery, relevance, confidence and a sensible next commitment?
A quick message audit

Can your next campaign answer these four questions?

AWhy should I notice? Is the opening specific, relevant and strong enough to interrupt indifference?
IWhy should I continue?Does the message reflect a real problem, aspiration or useful insight?
DWhy should I want this? Can the customer see the result, proof and value in practical terms?
AWhat should I do next?Is the primary action obvious, proportionate and easy to complete?
