Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are high school buddies starting a band. However, they are about to fail their history class, which means Ted would be sent to military school. They receive help from Rufus (George Carlin), a traveler from a future where their band is the foundation for a perfect society. This movie is a great parable for any business owner. What I mean is this….
As business owners, it’s not unusual to be faced with situations that are quite confronting. This can be in the form of losing a major client, losing custom due to roadworks near our retail premises, maybe the resignation of a key staff member or – a host of other reasons that can cause us stress and anxiety.
So, where does the “excellent adventure” part come into it?
Well, it’s your response and attitude to such adverse circumstances that will affect how you see the experience, plus, will also likely determine the business outcome – good or bad!
I have seen far too many instances of business owners “chucking in the towel” when faced with difficulties. The sad thing is, had they gone down another route, they and their business could have been saved and indeed – prospered!
The question is – “What would you do if faced with a major adverse circumstance? How would you feel and how would you react?”
One of the most detrimental things that a business owner can do is to develop a “she’ll be right, mate” defence when faced with a pending dire situation. Typically, it’s an Aussie answer that comes about, mainly because of a false sense of pride – pride in NOT seeking help when it’s needed.
Sure, you might not like asking for help from the right quarters. No-one’s asking you to “like” it. However, sometimes it’s merely a matter of commonsense to seek help.
Rather, see this time as a personal challenge .. a challenge to your ability to survive, a challenge to you to be better as a person and as the owner of a business over which YOU have control. Remember, only YOU can determine the final outcome of your actions. No-one else. It’s all on your shoulders. And this is where and when your “Excellent Adventure” begins!
So, who do you go to for help? Well, that depends on the issue at hand. In an “ideal world”, you will know who to contact. For instance, let’s surmise that you have just received an unwelcome reminder from the ATO about a tax debt. Who are you going to call? Your dentist? No – you will contact your accountant – immediately. He/she is the expert in such matters and should be able to help you deal with this situation.
But what if you don’t have a trusted tax adviser? In fact, what if you don’t know who to go to in any given situation that appears difficult, or even “impossible” to resolve?
The solution is quite simple actually. You go to a professional. Someone who is easy to research to establish their credentials. Someone who is well-experienced AND connected to the right business experts who will (a) truly have your business and personal interests at heart and (b) who will advise you with competence and integrity.
